Maughlin Storm broke a Canadian record recently when his 800th daughter classified EX. Storm’s statistics include 803 EXs within the 42,899 daughters classified. It gives him a 69% Good Plus or better ranking in the 13 years following his initial proof.
Putting the numbers into perspective is Storm’s sire,Madawaska Aerostar, whichhas 53 EX daughters from 22,856 classified. His grandsire, Holstein breed patriarch Hanoverhill Starbuck, (whichlived for almost 20 years) has 418 EX daughters from 37,960 classified.
Globally, Storm daughters remain some of the most influential impact cows of our time as bull mothers, record milk producers, index toppers, brood cows, farm favourites and show winners. As a sire of sons, Storm has proven himself, siring (among others) modern-day sires Ladino Park Talent *RC, Pursuit September Storm *RC, Comestar Stormatic (whichhas two sons within the American TPI Gen-Mark Stormatic Sanchez and Golden-Oaks St Alexander). He is also the maternal grandsire of 21 Semex sires.
Storm’s highest-profile daughter, Braedale Baler Twine, was chosen as Holstein International’s 2008 Global Cow of the Year. She is the dam of superstar sire Braedale Goldwyn and everyone knows how that story goes.
Storm’s power-packed paternal pedigree that includes his sire, Aerostar, is preceded by Hanoverhill Starbuck and, in turn, Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation (which was named the bull of the century by the Holstein International Association in 1999). Elevation is also considered to have the most actual descendents in the United States (according to the Sire Summaries April 2009 – US Holstein Association).
He was bred by the McPhedran family, of Maughlin Holsteins and Jerseys in Ontario, Canada. Mark McPhedran remembers Storm as a calf. Today Maughlin is a Master Breeder herd and milks 45 Holsteins and 15 Jerseys (which includes an EX daughter sired by Storm).
“He was one of three full brothers from a flush to Aerostar,” Mark said. “The reason Wykholme Dewdrop Tacy-ET (Storm's dam) was chosen as a bull mother was because of her index and the cow family she was from. Aerostar was chosen as the flush sire because LPI had just started in Canada and he was No.1 for this rating. “And there is no doubt that Storm has helped promote our herd and make his family more familiar.”
So, as Storm’s family tree deepens and lengthens through the achievements of his progeny (many of which are just starting their careers) there can be no doubting that this bull’s impact has been so much more than a storm in a teacup.
