HFBOOST

HFBoost Female Genomic Testing Service

Nominations close 23 August 2013

What is it?

HFBoost is a joint venture between Holstein Friesian New Zealand and CRV Ambreed, which provides an open female genomic testing service exclusive to members of Holstein Friesian New Zealand.

This service allows breeders the opportunity to test individual animals within their herd, i.e. out of top cows or cow families, or test an entire age group population. To begin with the genomic testing will be carried out using a 50,000 SNP chip, however as technology improves over time it is expected this will change.

HFBoost is open to all registered females between 0 and 24 months of age at the time of nomination.* Members will receive confidential genomic breeding values (predictions) for each animal tested. The Member can use the results to whatever advantage they wish, whether it be selecting a mating sire to meet on-farm requirements or to identify potential brood dams for flushing.

At this stage of the service there are no obligations on the part of the owner, Holstein Friesian New Zealand or CRV Ambreed to go any further, except that all females tested have the potential to enter the next stage of HFBoost.

HFTurboBoost identifies potential bull dams to produce young sires to populate Genetic Leaders, the young sire proving joint venture scheme between CRV Ambreed and Holstein Friesian New Zealand. If a female is identified and brought into HFTurboBoost, the Member will mate her to a sire (selected under criteria set by the Holstein Friesian New Zealand Sire Proving Committee) using recommendations from the CRV Ambreed Mating Programme.

If the mating results in a bull calf, he will go forward for the selection process to potentially enter the Genetic Leaders team. If the mating results in a heifer calf, she could be selected by the Holstein Friesian New Zealand Sire Proving Committee to enter HFBoost to be genomically tested, at no cost to the member.

* As long as the nominated female meets the requirements in the terms and conditions on the nomination form, she will not be turned away from this service.

How do I do it?

Members can nominate their animals for testing anytime of the year, the genomic runs occur in February, May, September and December every year. All nominations must be received at least six weeks prior to each run.

The process is as follows:
1. Nominate Females for genomic screening (Nomination dates will be advertised in the nzholstein magazine, newsletters and through the Holstein Friesian New Zealand website).
2. AsureQuality collects samples from nominated females for screening
3. Data and genotypings are extracted by Genomnz
4. Data is sent to CRV in the Netherlands for calculation
5. Genomic results returned to New Zealand
6. Confidential Genomic BVs are sent to the Member
7. Sire Proving Committee reviews the results four times a year to identify potential bull dams for Genetic Leaders for Selection into HFTurboBoost.
8. If selected for HFTurboBoost, Mating using CRV Ambreed’s TRGM mating programme.
9. Bull calf – enters selection pool for Genetic Leaders. Heifer Calf – enters selection pool for entry into HFBoost at no cost to the owner.

From the close-off of the final nomination date, it will be approximately two months before the results are available to the Member.

Cost $250.00 + GST per nomination

What will I get?

As a breeder HFBoost offers you an extra tool in your genetics kit gathering more information on members of your herd to help with your breeding programme.

Benefits:
• Using the BVs to make on-farm mating decisions
• Using the BVs to identify the strengths and weaknesses in each individual and use for corrective mating
• Accelerate genetic gain within your herd
• Develop cow families
• Identification of potential bull dams for the Genetic Leaders programme

You will receive a confidential report of the genomic breeding values and the opportunity to have your stud recognised if it goes through to HFTurboBoost and a bull graduates through Genetic Leaders.
